Case for Rapid Growth of Decentralized BESS: Uninterrupted Power Needs for Industries and Peak Load Shaving – Part 6
With a rapid growth of the manufacturing sector and other power intensive applications like Data Centers etc the power demand in India is bound to increase significantly in the coming years.
Many critical industries need 24X7 uninterrupted power for running their business operations smoothly. The quality of power significantly determines the productivity of the industries.
Especially in the summer season with peak power demand, there are frequent outages in certain areas affecting the manufacturing sector forcing them to rely on costly Diesel Gensets. This not only increases their operational costs but also causes significant pollution.
With the presence of multiple heavy electrical equipment, the surge current can sometimes lead to breaching the sanctioned power load. For such breaches there is a hefty penalty levied for exceeding the allocated peak demand by various DISCOMs which impacts the P&L.
To manage such issues industries can implement appropriately sized BESS systems which not only help save on diesel costs but also help with Peak load shaving. Many industries also have either solar rooftop or ground mounted projects installed in their premises which can be used for off peak hours charging of BESS for reduction of the peak demand charges and the overall electricity bills.
