A Case for Rapid Growth of Decentralized (BTM) BESS: Rise of Personal and Commercial Electric Mobility - Part 2
As there is a substantial transition underway in the personal mobility segment from ICE to EVs including Electric 2Ws and 4Ws, the demand related to EV charging is bound to significantly increase.
This will put a lot of additional burden on the constrained grid and become a bottleneck soon for the further electrification. Charging of EVs especially in large housing societies will need approval for additional power demand and will face bottlenecks related to upgrades required for the sub-stations, transformers capacity bottlenecks.
The ideal solution for such a scenario would be to have BTM BESS systems installed in the large societies which are dedicatedly used for EV charging. These BESS systems can be charged with a smart combination of solar rooftop and off peak hours charging to minimize the impact on the grid.
For the electrification journey to move forward, it is critical that the customers must have the freedom and flexibility to choose where they charge their EVs. Having a household BESS or at a residential society level will offer this comfort and help overcome range anxiety and the inconvenience of putting up with charging vehicles at odd hours.
For the commercial fleet electrification as well, it is imperative to have large battery banks and dedicated charging bays for maximum fleet uptime. Purely relying on grid is infeasible from both technical and regulatory perspective. The BESS systems can be charged from nearby ground mounted solar and off peak hours charging which can enable a highly cost effective charging mechanism.
Having BESS based EV charging also presents the advantage of DC fast charging enabling rapid TAT for EV charging. While the underlying battery technology to support DC Fast charging itself is rapidly evolving as demonstrated by latest BYD unveil of MW level charging capability, it will also need buffer of adequate BESS capacity in the vicinity of the charging ports to minimize load on the grid.
